As professionals in the theater business, we know that most dancers aspiring to a Broadway career will find most of their work in the chorus. In fact, there is a long and proud tradition of being a Broadway gypsy, as these talented ensemble players are called. Broadway gypsies must be triple threat performers – able to dance, sing, and act, and ready to take a job anywhere, at a moment’s notice. They need to think on their feet, quickly become part of a team in a competitive environment, and perhaps be ready for a chance at a part: Bernadette Peters, Christopher Walken, and Shirley MacLaine are three former Broadway chorus members who made it big.

We work hard! The day begins at 9:00am and finishes at 6:00pm. Evenings are spent in special presentations with faculty and guest artists. While Broadway Theater Dance Workshop is first and foremost a dance intensive, the curriculum also includes voice and acting classes with experienced and top quality teachers. Mornings are spent in technique classes – ballet, jazz, tap, theater dance, voice, and drama. Afternoons are spent in a professional rehearsal setting, learning original choreography in preparation for our end-of-the-workshop performances, which will be held the last day of the workshop at the NDI-NM Dance Barns in Santa Fe. The 2009 show was attended by 500 wildly appreciative audience members!

Class Descriptions
All classes are leveled according to ability.

Theater Dance / Jazz: Clean, polished dancing in a myriad of exciting styles is the focus of this daily class, taught by a host of Broadway veterans including Tim Santos, former assistant director and choreographer of Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular.

Tap: Perfect your sounds and expand your rhythmic repertoire with intense daily study led by tap masters such as NYC master teacher Germaine Salsberg.

Ballet: The basis of a great Broadway dancer is solid ballet technique. BTDW students have ballet class every day, taught by former Kansas City Ballet principal and accomplished teacher Russell Baker - with live piano accompaniment.

Voice / Acting: Learn how to be a triple threat pro, from triple threat pros. With incredible credits from over 20 Broadway shows, these teaching artists will address breathing, pitch, diction and confidence – all on Day 1. Daily group classes will follow.

The Dance Barns
Broadway Theater Dance Workshop is presented by National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM). NDI-NM was founded with the knowledge that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate children. The purpose of our distinctive dance programs is to help children develop discipline, a standard of excellence, and a belief in themselves that will carry over into all aspects of their lives. The workshop will take place at the Dance Barns, NDI-NM’s statewide headquarters - a state-of-the-art facility which includes five beautiful sprung-floor studios, a 500-seat theater, plentiful lounging and stretching areas, dressing rooms, and a kitchen.
